HBOT FAQs
What to expect
Our hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) session, also known as a ‘dive’, takes place in a hard chamber where you’ll lie down comfortably, supported with pillows. A blanket or hot water bottle can be provided for extra warmth. Over the first few minutes, the chamber will gradually pressurise. Most sessions last between 60 and 90 minutes, and during this time you’re welcome to read, meditate, or simply rest or sleep.
You’ll breathe concentrated oxygen through a cannula throughout your session. As the pressure builds, you may feel your ears pop slightly — much like the sensation during take-off or landing on a flight. This is completely normal and can be eased by yawning, swallowing, moving your jaw, or gently blowing while pinching your nose. If you feel any discomfort, let your technician know. Pressurisation will pause until you’re comfortable. If you’re mildly congested, we can adjust the dive to a gentler pressure (1.2 ATA instead of 1.5 ATA), which still offers therapeutic benefits.
One of our trained technicians will be with you throughout your dive. They’ll guide you through every step and stay in contact via a built-in phone and walkie talkie, ensuring you feel relaxed and supported.
You may hear sounds such as air flowing through valves or the chamber venting — all part of normal operation. As your session comes to an end, the chamber will slowly return to normal pressure. You may need to equalise your ears again as this happens. Once the pressure is back to normal, the door will release and can be gently pushed open. Take your time getting out — it’s normal to feel a little unsteady after lying down for a while. Your technician will be on hand to assist if needed.
How often should I do HBOT?
Everyone is different. Some people use HBOT regularly to manage chronic conditions or support recovery. In your initial consultation we will suggest how many sessions and the frequency depending on what you are using mHBOT for.
You can choose to:
Visit our clinic for scheduled appointments
Rent a chamber to use from the comfort of home.
How should I prepare for treatment?
Each hyperbaric oxygen therapy session typically takes around 90 minutes, so we recommend eating and drinking beforehand, and using the bathroom prior to your appointment. Please note that food and drink are not permitted inside the chamber. If you have diabetes, we ask that you bring a suitable snack, which can be kept nearby in case your blood sugar drops during the session.
To get the most from your treatment, we recommend avoiding nicotine for several hours before and after your dive. This includes smoking and the use of nicotine patches. The longer you are nicotine-free, the better your body will respond to the increased oxygenation.
No alcohol should be consumed four (4) hours before treatment.
Please wear light, comfortable clothing made from natural fibres where possible. Belts and shoes will need to be removed before entering the chamber. You’re welcome to bring a book or magazine to read — we also provide current reading material for your use.
Let your technician know if there have been any recent changes to your health. This includes new medications, sinus or ear infections, or if you may be pregnant.
Can I communicate when I am in the chamber?
Yes, you will be able to talk with your Hyperbaric technician at any time. You will take a walkie talkie into the chamber with you.
Are there any risks involved with mHBOT?
Generally, mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy is very safe. Otic barotrauma (ear pain) can occur due to difficulty equalising ear pressure. It is typically quite temporary and easily controlled. Yawning or swallowing can remedy it—similar to what one would do when taking off and landing in an airplane.
Other issues such as seizures, myopia (nearsightedness), cataracts, and oxygen toxicity do not relate to mild HBOT therapy as they are unheard of at pressures of 1.5 ATA and below.
When should I NOT go into a mild hyperbaric chamber?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is generally safe and well tolerated. However, there are a few situations where treatment is not recommended.
You should not undergo HBOT if you have:
Pneumothorax (collapsed lung)
Air-trapping emphysema
HBOT may also be unsuitable in the following cases:
An acute asthma attack
Severe heart disease, especially if your ejection fraction is below 35 percent
Congenital spherocytosis (a rare blood condition where red blood cells are more fragile)
COPD or emphysema with carbon dioxide retention, which could increase the risk of pneumothorax during treatment
High fever
Recent chest surgery, especially where air may still be trapped in wounds — we recommend extra caution
Retinal detachment that was repaired using an oil bubble
Optic neuritis
Uncontrolled seizure disorders
Upper respiratory or ear infections, which may make it difficult to equalise pressure in the ears or sinuses
If you are pregnant or think you might be, please speak with your hyperbaric technician before booking.
Medications to discuss with your healthcare provider:
Some medications are known to interact poorly with mild HBOT. Please talk to your doctor before treatment if you are taking:
Cisplatin – a chemotherapy drug
Disulfiram (Antabuse®) – used to treat chronic alcohol dependence
Doxorubicin (Adriamycin®) – a chemotherapy drug
Mafenide acetate (Sulfamylon®) – a topical cream used to treat infection in burns
If you’re unsure whether HBOT is right for you, we’re happy to answer questions or speak with your primary care provider to ensure it’s safe.
PEMF Mat FAQs
What to expect
A typical session lasts around 20 to 30 minutes. You’ll lie fully clothed on the mat in a quiet space, allowing the electromagnetic pulses to do their work while you rest.
What does it feel like?
Most people feel very little during the session – perhaps a gentle warmth or slight tingling as circulation improves. Many find it deeply relaxing and often drift off during treatment.
Is it safe?
Yes. PEMF therapy has been studied and used safely for decades. The QRS-101 mat delivers low-frequency pulses that are within the natural range of the body’s own electromagnetic fields.
Do I need to do anything to prepare?
No special preparation is needed. Simply wear comfortable clothing and arrive well-hydrated. We’ll guide you through the rest.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on your condition and goals. Some people feel a difference after just one or two sessions, while others benefit from regular use over a longer period. We’ll help you create a plan that suits your needs.
Can I combine this with other treatments?
Yes – and we often recommend it. We regularly combine PEMF therapy with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy or other wellness services to support deeper healing and recovery.
Infrared Sauns FAQs
What’s the difference between infrared and traditional saunas?
Infrared saunas use gentle light-based heat to warm the body from the inside out. This allows for a more comfortable, deeper sweat without needing very high air temperatures.
Will I need to prepare anything?
Just stay well hydrated before and after your session. We provide towels and filtered water, and you’ll have time to rest and cool down.
What to expect
Sessions are calm and unhurried. You’ll have a private space to relax and recover.
Each session includes:
30 to 45 minutes in our infrared sauna
Towels, filtered water and time to cool down
Option to combine with other therapies (like HBOT or PEMF)
Most people begin to feel the benefits after just a few sessions, though regular use can create deeper, more lasting shifts in energy, sleep and pain levels.
Can I combine sauna with other treatments?
Yes. Infrared sauna pairs well with PEMF & Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.
Is it safe for everyone?
Most people tolerate infrared saunas well. If you’re pregnant or managing a complex medical condition, we’ll talk through your options and ensure it’s right for you.
